The first Sam Hill CD. Here are some notes about it: The CD is entirely instrumental. All the tunes are for solo guitar. All except one ('A Mighty Fortress Is Our Lord') are original compositions. ABOUT THE TUNES: BEGIN- Well, it is the first tune. #12----Confusingly, not the twelfth tune. IT HURTS YOU MORE--Uses an 8-bar blues chord progression. The title comes (approximately) form an Elmore James song that uses the same progression. OLD SONG-- Because it is. PARTY UPSTAIRS--You weren't invited and they're getting very drunk. DREAMLAND---Whole-tone sounds put us to sleep and we enter Dreamland. TAXAS BLUES--written on, or around, April 15th. A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR LORD--A hymn Sam heard as a child, when waylaid by some religious group or other. A New Orleans 'second line' takes over at the end. BEA-- Every girl's name should have a song associated with it. Here's one that others have missed. THE RUNAWAY TRAIN--The twain and it's meeting. GOING NOWWHERE FAST, SLOWLY---Truth in labeling. At the end it fades out because it reused to end.(Influences: Sor, Fahey, MC5) AGAIN-- Yeah, that's right.

SOME NOTES ON THE TUNES FROM “THE HOPE CHEST” CD:

101 (N) AT NIGHT open C (CGCGBE), key of C WHO WAS SHE standard tuning, key of E. (See the photo on right hand page on the inside of the CD booklet.) THE PLEASURES OF HOPE drop D tuning, key of D. I found this hornpipe in "O'Neill's Music Of Ireland". My first attempt at arranging an Irish tune for solo guitar. Absolutely not intended to be authentic. THE ROCK KNOCK CRUISE standard tuning, key of E. KEEP A-KNOCKING ( Little Richard) Rockin' Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu (Huey "Piano" Smith & His Clowns) Sea Cruise (Freddie Cannon) I realized that the above 3 songs*, all recorded in New Orleans in the 1950's, use the same chord progression. In E it's: ll E l E l E l E l l B l B l E l E ll. So I "borrowed" the progression and wrote this tune. * (And if I know of 3, it's likely that there are another 50 that I don't know about.) FRAGMENTS DADGAD tuning, key of D. NOIVOUS BLUES standard tuning, key of G. A 24 1/2 bar blues, with a bridge. ONE RAINY AFTERNOON TOO MANY standard tuning. This one wanders around a little bit, harmonically. Starts in C# minor, goes through F# and E minor and ends back in C# minor. Truthfully, where I live there haven't been too many rainy afternoons in quite a while. THE ESSENCE OF PATIENCE standard tuning, key of B. SHORTNIN' BREAD standard tuning, key of A. .......What the heck. NOT LITTLE WALTER drop D tuning, key of D minor. STUMBLIN' HOME standard tuning, key of C. AFTER YOU'VE GONE standard tuning, key of A. Written in 1913 by Turner Layton and Henry Creamer. THE HOPE CHEST standard tuning, key of C.
